Standard Display Types
Standard Displays are what you would think of when you think of most aisles at a retailer. When measuring, it's important not to forget to multiply the length of the aisle by the total number of shelves to get an accurate total linear inch measurement.
Measuring Shelves
Many of the categories we are measuring will be located in standard aisles and on multiple shelves that are stocked year-round (i.e. Health & Beauty, Food, Toys and Cleaning categories)
To gain an accurate linear inch measurement, measure the linear inches for one shelf and multiply that measurement by the number of shelves that category is on to arrive at the total linear inches for that category.
For example, if one shelf in this Health & Beauty aisle measured 184 linear inches and there were 6 total shelves, you would report 1104 total linear inches. (184*6 = 1104)
*Don't forget to subtract out any empty space!
Because we are using linear inches as a proxy for inventory, any shelf with sellable inventory (meaning you could pick it up and purchase it) should be included in the linear inch measurements. For example, in the photo below we would include measurements from both of the yellow lines in the total for this display.
Measuring Length, not Height
Remember, we are measuring length, not depth or height. For example, in the photo below we would only measure the yellow lines, we would not account for the stack of inventory (the height)
Measuring Mattresses
Because mattresses are bulky, it's tempting to think you need to measure much more than you do! All you need to do is walk the length of the mattress display and record it.
Measuring Carpet
There are often multiple aisles of carpet at Ollie's locations. Like with Mattresses, it's going to be tempting to feel like you need to measure much more than you need to! For Carpet, you'll just walk the yellow line for every aisle and include the total measurement into the linear inches for Flooring.
Do not measure Displays, only Available Inventory
Some areas will have product on display that is not available for purchase. For example, in this photo, you would only measure the yellow lines (the inventory on shelves) and not the product in the blue box.
