Types of Promotions
Common Promotions
Here are the details on the common types of promotions you may see on Coach merchandise.
Clearance / Sale Items at a Percent Discount
This promotion includes items that are a certain percentage off the original price. For example, a rack with a sign that reads, "All items on this table, 10% off" or "All Swinger handbags 20% off".
On your datasheet, you will need to note the following details:
- Item category
- Number of styles subject to promotion
- Mode original starting price
- % discount
- Item description
- How the promotion was communicated (more on this later)
Clearance / Sale Items at a New Price
These are items that are marked down from the original price to a new, lower price – for example, a table of handbags marked down to $99.99, or a rack of shoes on sale for $50. This will likely be indicated by signage near the item, but could also be indicated on a brightly colored sticker on the tag.
On your datasheet, you will need to note the following details:
- Item category
- Number of styles subject to promotion
- Original starting price
- New price
- Item description
- How the promotion was communicated (more on this later)
Storewide % or $ off
This promotion type is only used when all Coach merchandise or the entire sales floor are eligible for the sale.
On your datasheet, you will need to note the following details:
- Dollars off or % discount
- Minimum amount to spend or Minimum number of items to buy to get the promotional pricing
- Items excluded from the promotional merchandise
- How the promotion was communicated (more on this later)
NOTE: If the Storewide sale is reliant on the use of a store credit card, we do include this promotion in our research.
Uncommon Promotions
The following are details about the types of promotions that you are unlikely to see on Coach merchandise, but should be familiar with just in case they become available.
BOGO (Buy-One-Get-One) at a new price or percent discount
This category includes all promotions that involve buying one item at full price and getting a second at a discount, a newly reduced price, or even free! For our purposes, buy one get one (BOGO) free means the same thing as BOGO 100% off.
On your datasheet, you will need to note the following details:
- Item category
- Number of styles subject to the promotion
- New price or % discount on the 2nd item
- Minimum amount to spend to get the promotional pricing
- Item description
- How the promotion was communicated (more on this later)
Bundles
Sometimes, you will see items grouped together and sold at a new price or percent discount for a better deal than if you bought them alone - for example, 2 pairs of shoes for $100, with individual prices of $75 each.
On your datasheet, you will need to note the following details for each bundle you see and each item in the bundle(s):
- New price or % discount
- Original starting price for the whole bundle
- Promotion end date (if available)
- Item description (for each item in the bundle)
- Item category (for each item in the bundle)
- How the promotion was communicated (more on this later)
Free Gift, Gift Card or Store Credit with Purchase
A free gift with purchase means that you’re getting something for free in exchange for your purchase, such as a sample item, a gift card, or store credit.
On your datasheet, you will need to note the following details:
- Free gift description
- Min spend amount to get the free gift or gift card
- Gift card amount or dollar value of free gift
- Gift card start date (if applicable)
- Promo or gift card end date (if applicable)
- Items excluded from the promotion
- How the promotion was communicated (more on this later)
