Type and Living Condition
For each brand / line of data, we also need to know the fee type (Type) and Living Condition. This information is SUPER important to the data, so it's important this is done correctly. Like the previous step, you will be able to find this information on the packaging, but for some brands you will need to pay close attention so that you categorize correctly.
Feed Type
There are two feed types: Traditional and Organic
Most store-brand eggs will be Traditional while Organic eggs will always be labeled as such.
-
Traditional
-
Traditional eggs typically have no specific labels that indicate organic so we'd categorize it under Traditional.
-
-
Organic
-
Organic eggs will clearly say Organic on the carton.
-
Living Condition
There are three types of living conditions: Caged, Cage-Free, and Pasture Raised (sometimes also called Free Range)
-
Caged
-
Typically, caged eggs will not have text saying "caged" - but a good rule of thumb is these eggs are generally the cheapest and if the packaging does not say Cage-Free or Pasture Raised, they are likely Caged.
-
-
Cage-Free
- Cage-Free options by the logo and labeling on the carton.

-
Pasture Raised / Free Range
- Pastured eggs will clearly state "Pasture Raised" or "Free Range" on the carton. Please take care not to confuse Cage-Free with Free Range as they are not the same.
Note: It's very important that we are getting Pasture Raised brands correctly identified. So if you are unsure, please take a photo of the packaging and jump online to figure it out. If you are still unsure, please send a ticket to the research team for help with identifying.
We have created a list with the egg brands and the Types and Living Conditions you are most likely to see. Click HERE to view the list. You can also use this list to double check your identification prior to data submission.
