Measuring Space
In many Haynes and Company projects you'll be asked to measure and report the total linear inches occupied by specific products. This may be inventory on a shelf, a table, a pallet or any number of display types. You may need to collect these inches a bit differently depending on the project, but the basic concepts are the same.
How to Measure
Many stores have tile floors, where each tile is 12 inches in width. (Please measure the tile with your foot just to ensure that it is 12 inches; if it is less it will be very apparent next to your foot.) If the store has 12-inch square tile flooring, an easy way to measure linear inches is to simply count the number of tiles. (For example: If the product takes up three floor tiles' worth of space, that would be 36 linear inches.) Counting the floor tiles gives you a very consistent unit of measure, and a very inconspicuous way of measuring in a store.
You can measure a store using your own two feet. First, measure the shoe you will be wearing in the store and record that length. Then, when you get to the store, measure walking heel to toe along the display you need to measure, counting how many steps you take. Then multiply that number by your shoe length, and presto! You have the total number of inches.
Lastly you can use a measuring tape app. There are many free apps available for use, just pick one that allows you to just walk with the measuring tape going.
Here are some measuring tape app choices.
AirRuler AR is one that works really well.
What to Measure
Depending on your project we will be asking you to measure a variety of things. Most commonly we will be asking you to measure shelves, racks, and area of pallets. Below are links on in-depth articles to learn how to measure each of these.
