Where We Are Counting
All traffic counts will occur outside of the stores. For most projects, you will not need to enter the stores in order to complete the counts.
You should find a position outside of each store where you are able to easily view the main (or busiest) door(s) of your assigned store(s). You should plan to stand in this same position on every count in order to ensure consistency in your counts on subsequent visits.
Deciding on which door is the "main" entrance
- Quickly walk or drive around the store to find the largest, most prominent entrance
- Look for the door nearest the main checkout area
- If there are multiple entrances on multiple floors of a mall, use your best judgment as to which is the "main" entrance; it will likely be on the ground floor
- Avoid small side entrances and doors that people seem to use to shortcut through the store rather than shop at the store
- Please make note of which entrance you collected data at and report this when you submit your data. This will allow us to keep the data collection point consistent for all subsequent visits.
- Wherever you choose to post yourself, be certain you have an unobstructed view of the main entrance, and pay close attention
Some vendors will have specific instructions laid out in the VMS laying out where to collect the counts. If you do not see specific instructions in your dashboard, please follow the steps above when deciding where to count.
This is an example of counting instructions:

Sephora at Kohl's
Sephora shops located inside of Kohl's are the one exception to the outside counts. this is Kohl's Sephora, where you need to find a spot inside of Kohl's to discreetly count traffic leaving the Sephora shops inside of Kohl's. For that project, we do NOT want all Kohl's traffic, just the shoppers leaving Sephora.
