Non-Clearance Promotions
Non-Clearance promotions are "standard sales," for instance, a rack of Tops that are 20% off. Starting prices and sales prices are pertinent to this data. There will be clear promotional signage on these items which will help you gather the necessary data.
For every Non-Clearance Promotion, you will always need to collect:
1) An Original Starting Price
2) A New Price and/or % Discount.
The most common Promotions you will see are Percent and New price discounts, buy-one-get-one (BOGO), category-wide and storewide sales.
Percent Discount:
These promotions are for items that are a specific percentage off the original price or a specific price markdown. For example, if the t-shirts on one table are all 20% off or a rack of pants all discounted from $59.99 to $35.99
Data to collect
- Item Category
- Original Starting Price
- % Discount / New Price
BOGO (Buy-One-Get-One):
BOGOs are when an item is free or discounted when the original item is purchased at full price. For this, you need to collect what needs to be purchased as well as what the customer would get. For our purposes, BOGO free is the same as BOGO 100% off.
Data to collect:
- Item Category
- New Price or % Discount on the 2nd item
- The minimum amount that has to be spent to get the promotional pricing (usually this is the full price of the first item)
Category-Wide
This promotion should only be selected when the ENTIRE category is on the SAME promotion. For example, if all swimwear in the store was marked down 15%. These promotions are not too frequent, but they do occur so you should be familiar with the data.
data to collect:
- $ Off or % Discount
- Minimum amount to spend or Minimum number of items to buy to get the promotional pricing (if there is no specific minimum spend, you can report the minimum amount as $1 and the minimum number of items is often 1)
- *NOTE: if the entire category is on sale, you'd report 100% of inventory ON promotion for the category
Storewide:
This promotion should only be selected when the ENTIRE store is on the SAME promotion. For example, if every item in the store was marked down 15%. These promotions are not too frequent, but they do occur so you should be familiar with the data.
Metrics to collect:
- $ Off or % Discount
- Minimum amount to spend or Minimum number of items to buy to get the promotional pricing (if there is no specific minimum spend, you can report the minimum amount as $1 and the minimum number of items is often 1)
- *NOTE: if the entire store is on sale, you'd report 100% of inventory ON promotion for every category
