Putting it all together
Here's an example of a more complicated display unit that you might encounter. Don't panic! They're not all like this, and you'll find with our system the data collection is quite simple using the steps we laid out:
1. Find the brand on your datasheet (in this case, elf)
2. Record the linear inches for each category seen.

Step 1: Measure the length of shelf
- Face = 36 inches
- Hard Tools - Brushes = 12 inches
Step 2: How many shelves for each category
- Face = 7 shelves
- Hard Tools - Brushes = 4 shelves (the top shelf is blenders and items we don't collect)
Step 3: Estimation of Full Space
- Face = 95% Full
- Hard Tools - Brushes = 100% Full
Step 4: Estimation of product categories
- Face - Skin Care = 20%
- Face - Base = 40%
- Face - Makeup All Other = 40%
- Hard Tools - Brushes = 100%
Step 5: Calculations
- Face Full Space = (36" * 7 Shelves) * (0.95 Full Space) = 239.4 inches Full Space for all Face categories
- Face - Skin Care = (239.4" * 0.20) = 47.88"
- Face - Base = (239.4" * 0.40) = 95.76"
- Face - Makeup All Other = (239.4" * 0.40) = 95.76"
- Hard Tools - Brushes Full Space = (12" * 4) * (1 Full Space) = 48 inches Full Space, since
- Hard Tools - Brushes = (48" * 1) = 48 inches added to the Hard Tools - Brushes count
3. Count the stockouts
*Remember!* Only count completely empty inventory slots as stockouts. In this case, there are no "display only" slots, so every empty slot gets counted.

The totals for this display would be:
Face - Base: 2
Face - Skincare: 1
