Best Strategy To Collect The Data
The best strategy is to walk around the store like a race track. For each brand you see on your trip around the store follow these steps:
1. First, look to see if the brand carries item(s) that fall into at least 1 of our 6 product categories. If it DOES NOT, ignore it and move on to another. If the brand carries item(s) that fall into at least 1 of our defined categories, move on to step 2.
2. Second, find the brand in your data sheet. We've listed the brands in alphabetical order so you can find the brand easily.
3. Collect the linear inches for each of the 6 product categories. Remember, if a brand has an item(s) that does not fall into our defined product categories then ignore that space. BUT, make sure to collect data on the item(s) that do fall into our defined product categories.
4. Collect the total number of stockouts for the brand by each product category. Remember, this is only a count. You do not need to collect any pricing or additional information on the stockout.
After completing the 4 steps above, move on to another brand! Find a good pathway through the store so you only have to walk through each aisle once.
Best practice for collecting data in the store: We have been told by many of our vendors on this project that using a voice recording application to collect data in the store is highly effective. Essentially, you can just read off your measurements and stockout data and then transcribe your notes when you get home. This strategy may help make your in-store data collection more effective.
Make sure while walking through the store that you keep an eye out for promotions. You will only need to snap a photo of the promotions you see.
